Frequently asked questions

Short answers to the most common questions about Ronto Reader.

Getting started

Which formats does Ronto Reader open?

Comics in CBZ and CBR, and books in EPUB and PDF. Comic pages can be JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF or HEIC images.

How do I get my books into the app?

Open Settings › Folders, tap Add folder and pick the folder that holds your files. The app reads that folder and its subfolders and builds the library from what it finds.

The library is checked again every time the app opens. If you copied files while the app was open, tap Rescan now on the same screen.

Why doesn't the app ask for access to all files?

Because it doesn't need it. It uses Android's own folder picker, and the system gives it access only to the folders you choose. You can remove a folder at any time in Settings › Folders; the files stay on your device.

Can I use an SD card, a USB drive or a cloud folder?

SD cards and USB drives, yes: their books show up whenever the storage is connected. Cloud folders depend on the storage app: some don't let other apps keep access to a folder, and then Ronto Reader can't add it.

Which devices does it run on?

Any phone or tablet with Android 10 or later. The interface was designed for e-ink screens like the Boox's, but it works just as well on regular screens.

Which languages is the app available in?

English, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish, German, French, Italian and Japanese. The app follows your device's language, and you can pick another one in Settings › General › Language.

Reading

How do I turn pages?

Swipe, tap the edges of the screen or press the volume keys. Edge taps and the volume keys can be turned on and off in Settings › Reader.

How do I read manga right to left, or scroll through webtoons?

Each book has a Reading mode in Book details: western comics (left to right), manga (right to left) or vertical, for webtoons.

To avoid setting it book by book, choose a Default reading mode in Folder settings. Books on Auto follow the folder; if the folder is on Auto too, the mode comes from the folder above or from the file's ComicInfo.xml.

Can I change the font and text size in EPUBs?

Yes. While reading, the Style tab lets you pick the typeface (the book's own, serif or sans serif), the text size and the line spacing. Fixed-layout pages keep their original design.

Two-page spreads and white margins make everything small. Can I fix that?

Yes. In Settings › Reader, Auto-rotate wide pages turns spreads to fill the screen, and Crop margins trims plain white or black borders from comics and PDFs. Both can be changed for each book.

Is there a dark theme?

Yes. In Settings › General › Theme, choose Light, Dark or Same as the device. In the dark theme, the app's screens are white on black; book pages keep their own colors.

When a file won't open

My CBR file won't open. Why?

The app reads CBR files in the RAR4 format, but not the newer RAR5. Convert the file to CBZ (a regular ZIP) with an archiving tool and it will open.

And when a CBZ won't open?

Usually the file was compressed with a method the app can't read (such as 7-Zip's LZMA, PPMd or Zstandard) or has a password. Save it again as a regular ZIP without a password. Pages in TIFF or JPEG XL aren't shown either.

Can I read DRM-protected books?

No. Ronto Reader doesn't open DRM-protected books or password-protected archives. It reads unprotected files that are on your device.

If I rename or move a file, do I lose my progress?

No, as long as it stays inside a monitored folder: on the next scan, the app recognizes the file in its new place and keeps your reading progress.

Privacy and data

Does the app need internet access?

No. Ronto Reader doesn't even have Android's internet permission: everything works offline, and nothing leaves your device through the app. If an EPUB points to an image or a font on the web, it simply doesn't load. The details are in the privacy policy.

Is my progress synced between devices?

No, because the app doesn't connect to anything: your progress and settings stay on the device. Android's automatic backup can keep that data in your Google account and bring it back when you reinstall the app or set up a new device. Book files aren't part of that backup.

I forgot my PIN. What now?

The app keeps only a hash of the PIN, which can't be reversed, so nobody can recover it. The only way back in is to clear the app's storage (Settings › Apps › Ronto Reader › Storage › Clear storage).

That erases your progress, galleries and settings, but not your book files: afterwards, just add your folders again.

Does the app have ads?

No third-party ads. Now and then, an ad for another Ronto Apps app may appear; if it bothers you, you can easily turn it off, at no cost.
