Privacy policy
Last updated:
Ronto Reader is an Android app for reading comics and ebooks. This policy explains what the app does with your data. The short version: it collects nothing, sends nothing and shares nothing. It doesn't even have internet access.
1.The short version
- Ronto Reader doesn't collect, store or share any personal data.
- The app has no internet access. It doesn't request Android's INTERNET permission, so it can't send or receive anything.
- It only reads the folders you choose through the Android file picker. Your books never leave your device.
- Reading progress, settings, galleries and the optional PIN are stored on your device only, in the app's private storage.
- No third-party ads, no accounts, no analytics, no crash reporting, no tracking.
- Now and then, ads for other Ronto Apps apps may appear. If they bother you, you can easily turn them off, at no cost.
2.Who is responsible
Ronto Reader is developed and published by Ronto Apps (“we”). For anything about this policy, write to contact@rontoapps.com.
3.Your files
To build your library, the app needs to read your comic and ebook files. It uses Android's Storage Access Framework: in Settings you pick the folders to monitor, and the system grants the app access to those folders only. The app never asks for the “All files access” permission.
In the folders you pick, the app reads the files in order to show them: their names, sizes and dates, their covers and page counts, and the metadata embedded in the files themselves, such as the title, author and series in a ComicInfo.xml or in an EPUB's package document. It can also rename, move and delete files, but only when you ask it to.
You can withdraw access at any time by removing a folder in Settings or by uninstalling the app.
4.What stays on your device
Everything the app saves lives in its private storage on your device, where other apps can't read it:
- The library index: the names, locations, sizes and dates of your files, the metadata read from them, and the covers it extracted.
- Your reading progress, your favorite pages and the galleries you create.
- Folder settings and app settings, including the language you choose.
- The app PIN, if you set one. It's never stored as you typed it: the app keeps a salted hash (PBKDF2 with HMAC-SHA-256), which can't be turned back into the PIN. If you forget it, the only way back in is to clear the app's data.
None of this is sent anywhere.
5.No internet access
Ronto Reader doesn't declare the INTERNET permission in its Android manifest, so Android blocks every network connection from the app. That means no analytics, no crash reporting, no third-party advertising, no updates downloaded by the app itself, and no way for your data to leave your device through the app.
When an EPUB refers to content on the web, such as an image or a font hosted online, that content simply doesn't load. The reader shows EPUB chapters in a web view with file and content access disabled: it only serves the chapters and resources from inside the book itself.
6.Ads for our other apps
Ronto Reader doesn't show third-party ads. Now and then, it may show an ad for another Ronto Apps app.
These ads come built into the app. Since it has no internet access, nothing is downloaded to show them, and no data about you or what you read is sent anywhere.
If they bother you, you can easily turn them off, at no cost.
7.Android backup
Android's Auto Backup may copy the app's data (your settings, library index and reading progress, but not your book files) to your Google Drive, together with the data of your other apps, as part of your device backup. That backup is tied to your Google account, encrypted, and governed by Google's privacy policy, not by this one. We never have access to it.
You can turn it off in your device's settings (usually Settings › Google › Backup, or Settings › System › Backup). The app's data then stays on the device only.
8.Permissions
The app's manifest declares no permissions at all: no internet, no location, camera, microphone, contacts, phone or notifications. Access to your folders is granted through the system file picker, folder by folder, and can be withdrawn at any time.
9.Google Play
If you install Ronto Reader from Google Play, the download is handled by Google under Google's terms and privacy policy. Google Play may show us aggregated, anonymous statistics about the app, such as the number of installs by country, or crash reports from users who chose to share usage and diagnostics data with Google. None of that lets us identify you.
10.Children
Ronto Reader isn't directed at children under 13. Since it collects no data at all, it collects no data from children either.
11.Your rights and your data
Because we don't collect any personal data, there's nothing we could access, correct, export or delete on your behalf: all of the app's data is on your device and under your control. To delete it, clear the app's storage (Settings › Apps › Ronto Reader › Storage › Clear storage) or uninstall the app.
Laws such as the European GDPR and Brazil's LGPD give you rights over your personal data. If you have any question about how they apply to Ronto Reader, write to contact@rontoapps.com.
12.Changes to this policy
If the app ever changes how it handles data, this page and the date at the top will be updated before the change reaches you. The current version is always at this address.
